Are all online games pretty much alike as they relate to what genre they fall under?

This question is for those who have played several different online games. I am referring to things like the "capture the flag" or "last man standing" type things as they relate to FPS's. How many times have those been used in FPS games? Probably all of them, right? I am talking about games in general when I ask the question. I know that a MMORPG game is going to be different form a FPS game or a racing game.
