I've personally only played Drift City http://driftcity.gamescampus.com/ which was pretty fun, its open world you can either race players, complete missions and buy upgrades, or just roam the map. Yeah it is free to play. They do have a cash shop option where you can purchase special items with real money. It is not necessary, most people don't bother with it.
